1. ⛽ The Gas Station Gamble

Hurricane Zoe is 48 hours away. You pass a gas station and see long lines starting to form.

1A — What do you do?

Fill your vehicle and all approved fuel containers if available. Fill your vehicle only. Wait until tomorrow because the storm is still two days away. Skip gas for now and grab snacks instead.

1B — How much fuel is usually in your vehicle during a hurricane?

2. 💧 The Last Case of Water

You walk into a packed store, and there is only one case of bottled water left.

2A — What is your move?

Grab the water while it is still available. Buy sports drinks instead. Skip water and hope the tap keeps working. Stock up on soda and juice instead.

2B — If water service stopped today, how long could you function using stored water?

3A — What do you do?

Secure or move loose items indoors. Secure only the largest items. Wait until tomorrow. Leave everything outside and hope for the best.

3B — Have you identified outdoor hazards around your home?

No Yes, but not recently. Most hazards are identified. Securing outdoor items is part of my storm checklist.

4. 💊 Medication Check

The storm is 48 hours away, and you realize you or someone who depends on you only has two days of important medication left.

4A — What do you do?

Try to refill the medication before the storm. Same-day refill if possible. Wait until after the storm has passed. Borrow from someone else. Hope the pharmacy reopens quickly after the hurricane.

4B — How prepared are you for medical needs during a storm?

5. 📻 Midnight Power Outage

It is late at night. Lightning hits nearby, the power goes out, the TV is off, and Wi-Fi is down.

Use an emergency radio or trusted official source for updates. Conserve phone battery while checking official updates. Scroll social media for answers. Assume it is fine and ignore it.

6. 📱 The “No Signal” Moment

Hurricane winds have knocked out cell service, but you need to contact someone important.

Use your emergency contact plan and backup contacts. Keep trying your cell phone. Hope text messages still go through. Figure it out when it happens.

6B — Do you currently have an emergency communication plan?

7. 🚗 The Evacuation Situation

Officials issue an evacuation order for your zone. Roads are getting busy, and internet service is unreliable.

Follow your pre-planned route and destination. Try to book a hotel while leaving. Drive until you feel far enough away from the storm. Figure it out after you leave.

You have to evacuate quickly, and you realize you still need to account for a pet or animal in your care.

Include pets in the emergency plan before the storm. Bring the pet but worry about supplies later. Leave first and figure it out later. Ask someone else to check on the pet later.

9. 🌊 Plan A Just Failed

Floodwater begins entering your home. Power is out. The storm is still active. Staying put may no longer be safe.

Activate your emergency relocation plan. Wait to see if conditions improve. Leave in a panic without any supplies. Try to patch up your home during the storm.
